Eine umfassende, kritische, aber jederzeit sachliche Analyse “of one of the most ambitious educational reform initiatives to date”. Sechs Jahre ist es her, seitdem Nicholas Negroponte die Idee vorstellte, 150 bis 200 Millionen Laptops an die Kinder der ärmsten Länder zu verteilen, weniger als 2 Millionen Laptops sind seitdem wirklich ausgeliefert worden und nicht alle haben ihren Bestimmungsort erreicht. Die Autoren beschreiben noch einmal systematisch die Vision hinter One Laptop per Child (OLPC) sowie die theoretischen Grundlagen des Projekts (”the constructionist learning theory of Seymour Papert”), geben einen exzellenten Überblick über den aktuellen Entwicklungsstand und zeigen die Schwachstellen des Projekts auf. Kurz: “a technocentric vision”.

Die “großen” Medien erreichen die Nachrichten aus dem “One Laptop Per Child” (OLPC)-Projekt derzeit nicht: Mitglieder des Führungsteams haben in den letzten Wochen das Projekt verlassen, was für einige Unruhe sorgte; und über technische Neuerungen und Feldaktivitäten kann man regelmäßig auf den OLPC-Seiten lesen. Von daher ist der vorliegende Artikel ein informatives Update. Er erinnert an die pädagogischen Ziele des Projekte, an den “constructionism”, an Seymour Papert und Jean Piaget, nimmt kritische Argumente auf (”cultural imperialism”), bleibt aber optimistisch:
“The debate over One Laptop Per Child and Constructionism will likely burn hot for a long time. All the better. Now that countries that embrace Constructionism, such as Peru, are deploying laptops, the philosophy will be battle tested in the field. Educators will learn by doing, and good will come of it.”
