Wie für Ulrich Beck steht auch für Don Tapscott und Anthony Williams die Hochschule auf dem Prüfstand: Doch während Beck versucht, einen gesellschaftlichen Auftrag der Hochschulen neu zu formulieren, beschreiben die amerikanischen Autoren, wie das Internet den Umgang mit Wissen radikal verändert und damit die Grundlagen des Hochschulsystems angreift:
“Universities are losing their grip on higher learning as the Internet is, inexorably, becoming the dominant infrastructure for knowledge — both as a container and as a global platform for knowledge exchange between people — and as a new generation of students requires a very different model of higher education.”

Zum Gegenentwurf von Tapscott und Williams gehört die Ablösung des “industrial model of student mass production” durch ein Modell, das “collaborative learning” konsequent in den Mittelpunkt der Pädagogik stellt. Zum neuen Modell gehört aber auch eine andere Form, Wissen zu entwickeln:
“Universities need an entirely new modus operandi for how the content of higher education is created. The university needs to open up, embrace collaborative knowledge production, and break down the walls that exist among institutions of higher education and between those institutions and the rest of the world.”

Die Autoren sprechen hier von einem “Global Network for Higher Learning”, das sie als fünfstufiges Phasenmodell beschreiben und das viele Elemente aus der aktuellen “Open”-Debatte (Open Educational Resources, Open Content, Open Teaching) enthält. Es lohnt sich in jedem Fall, die Entwürfe von Ulrich Beck sowie Don Tapscott und Anthony Williams “am Stück” zu lesen.
